Delhi Plans to Install Over 5K kerbside EV Charging Points in Next Three Years

The Delhi Government has revealed that it will install over 5,000 kerbside charging stations for electric vehicles on all main roads in the next three years. The implementation of EV kerbside charging in Delhi was the topic of a meeting called by Jasmine Shah, Vice Chair of the Dialogue and Development Commission of Delhi (DDCD).

The Delhi Government Official also claims that kerbside EV charging, which allows EVs to be charged while being parked on roadside kerbs using either street light lamp posts or through dedicated charging posts, is an emerging concept globally.

The Delhi Government unveiled a three-year action plan last month with a target of 18,000 charging stations for Delhi’s infrastructure.

The government asserted that kerbside charging is a key strategy for reaching this goal because it makes use of Delhi’s already-existing civic and electrical infrastructure for the deployment of charge points. During the conference, it was determined to use kerbside charging at lamp posts and substation locations that have or are close to areas with on-street parking.

The procedure will begin with a trial project that includes 100 kerbside chargers distributed evenly among the three DISCOMs. According to officials, the pilot would be developed under the supervision of DDC, and DISCOMs will take the lead in installing chargers on PWD roadways.

In Delhi, there are 1,400 km of PWD roads with almost one lakh lamp posts. Following the pilot, the Delhi Government will scale the rollout throughout the capital. According to it, kerbside pricing will offer practical choices for the priority section of vehicles, which includes two- and three-wheeled vehicles, and it will be crucial for residential colonies without authorised parking. Additionally, it was mentioned that kerbside pricing has been successful internationally in cities like London and New York, where 30 to 50% of car users park on the street at night, according to officials.

The DISCOMs will choose the route segments where this experiment can launch with the installation of 100 EV chargers. Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) and the state EV cell of the Transport department will serve as the state’s nodal agencies for operationalizing the entire experiment. Over 5,000 kerbside EV chargers would be installed by the Delhi government in the following three years, according to the Delhi Government.
