The partnership with Coulometrics has as one of its objectives the roll-to-roll anode manufacture with META’s unique PLASMAfusion film-based, coated copper current collector devices, designed to deliver the performance of solid copper foil while greatly decreasing the component weight.

Meta Materials and Coulometrics Join Hands to Develop Next-Generation Batteries

Canada-based smart materials developerMeta Materials has recently announced collaboration with lithium-ion battery material development company, Coulometrics. Through this partnership, Meta Materials will independently assess its platform technologies for battery applications and make it more powerful next-generation batteries.

President & CEO of Meta Materials, George Palikaras stated, “With the recent strategic acquisitions of Plasma App and Optodot, together with our roll-to-roll high volume thin-film coating production plant in Quebec, we now have capabilities to make Li-ion batteries safer and more effective. We are thrilled to be working with renowned battery developer Coulometrics. META and Coulometrics will collaborate to develop and test the safety and performance of our new battery technologies, which we believe will enable a new generation of safer lithium-ion batteries, leveraging Dr. Buiel’s 28 years of experience and state-of-the-art materials synthesis and battery assembly facility.”

META’s proprietary thermal-isolation technology has been used to isolate internal short circuits in metal-coated polymer current collectors made by PLASMAfusion. Cells that use metal-coated polymer current collectors show lower bulk (up to 95% less copper or aluminum) and manufacturing costs, as well as a lower risk of thermal runaway during nail penetration.

META has forged partnerships with major OEMs and tier 1 material companies to provide technologies that will safeguard Li-ion batteries in a variety of applications. These technologies will function in conjunction with META’s second-generation NPORE nanocomposite ceramic separators.

The partnership with Coulometrics seeks roll-to-roll anode manufacture with META’s unique PLASMAfusion film-based, coated copper current collector devices, designed to deliver the performance of solid copper foil while greatly decreasing the component weight.

Cell construction and characterization tests using META’s exclusive NPORE ceramic nanoporous separator materials, which offer exceptional heat resistance and greater performance for increased battery safety. The enhanced safety profile of batteries built with NPORE separators and coated copper current collectors has been achieved through safety testing, which entails nail penetration, hot box testing, and crushes testing.
