Volvo Cars has announced its target of producing electric motors at its powertrain plant in Skövde, Sweden. Earlier this year, Volvo Cars declared its high investments in the in-house design and development of e-motors for the next generation. After which, comes the investment of 700 million SEK for in-house-production of E-motors. In the first stage, the Skövde plant will assemble e-motors, then the company aims to bring the full manufacturing process for E-motors in-house into a facility in Skövde.

Javier Varela, senior vice president of Industrial Operations and Quality, commented, “The team is highly skilled and committed to delivering on the highest quality standards. So it is only fitting that they will be a part of our exciting future.”

E-motors are a fundamental building block of electric cars, together with the battery and power electronics. The interplay between these three component areas is crucial in developing premium electric vehicles. However, the design and development of the company’s electric motors take place in Gothenburg, Sweden, and Shanghai, China.

The remaining activities at the Skövde engine plant will be transferred to a separate subsidiary of Volvo Cars, named Powertrain Engineering Sweden (PES). PES is going to be merged with its owner company, Geely’s combustion engine operations.

In October, Iberdrola and Volvo Car España signed a framework cooperation agreement to promote sustainable mobility, under which the energy group will supply charging solutions for the car manufacturer’s Recharge vehicle range in Spain. The solution that Iberdrola and its portfolio company Wallbox will supply to Volvo is designed to make charging its customers’ vehicles easier as it includes both the supply of the charging point and its installation in a private or shared garage.
