Expect Govt to Float Tender for 3500 Electric Powertrain Vehicles Soon Sona Comstar to make electric powertrains for Indian, South Asian markets

The Centre is considering replacing the federal government’s fleet of gasoline and diesel vehicles with electric powertrain vehicles, and the process will soon begin with the challenge of placing an order for 3500 electric powertrain vehicles.

Convergence Energy Services Ltd. (CESL), a state-controlled company, has announced that if more manufacturers introduce electric vehicles at lower price points, the system’s size may grow. About 600,000 gasoline and diesel vehicles are part of the combined fleet of the federal and state governments.

Mahua Acharya, the CEO of CESL, said “A tender for 3,500 electric vehicles will soon be floated because the company has a “verified” need for them. In the fleet category, there is also a chance to boost the penetration of electric vehicles. Fleet is one market where EV 4W sales can soar with additional options being introduced to the mainstream market.”

The latest CESL tender is released at a time when the market for passenger cars is beginning to embrace EVs. For the first time, the market for passenger EVs is about to surpass 50,000 units. Although the verified demand is 3,500, it may increase to 10,000 automobiles within two years. Over the next three years, about 20 EVs are expected to be on Indian roads.

Recently, Convergence Energy Services Ltd. (CESL) invited EoI (Expression of Interest) for the financing of electric vehicles across India. This Expression of Interest (EOI) document was for the empanelment of Financial Institutions (FI), such as NBFCs and Scheduled Banks, to finance electric vehicles facilitated by Convergence Energy Services Ltd. (CESL) in partnership with various state governments across India.

Additionally, CESL also invited RFP (request for proposal) for the operation and maintenance of e-buses, including engaging all manpower, personnel, drivers, labor, etc., as may be required to be deployed by it for implementation of the project, on a GCC basis, by the provisions of this RFP.
