BESCOM To Deploy Charging Stations On Toll Plazas Of Bengaluru-Pune Highway Second Phase of Expansion of EV Charging Stations in New Delhi Gets NDMC Nod

A move that is expected to raise electric vehicle adoption in the state of Karnataka, Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) has planned to set up fast electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at toll plazas on the national highway that connects Bengaluru and Pune – the big metros of the region. BESCOM will deploy these charging stations within Karnataka on NH-48.

The officials of BESCOM have submitted a proposal in this regard to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The objective is to set up electric vehicle charging stations at 10 toll plazas in the state. The noted ones are Tumakuru, Chitradurga, Hiriyur, Belagavi, and Davanagere.

As per the scheme of things, BESCOM wants to deploy two charging stations at each of the toll plazas. As per reports, these installations will be equipped with 120 KW CCS2 EV fast chargers. BESCOM will start setting up the EV charging stations on receiving NHAI approval for the project.

The objective of the Karnataka government is to make intercity and interstate travels easy for those who own electric vehicles. Toll plazas are one of the safest places to charge electric vehicles.

Recently, state owned Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) announced the launch of 6 EV fast-charging corridors at 33 of its petrol stations in Karnataka. Electric two-wheeler maker Ather Energy signed for setting up 1000 fast-charging stations across the state. BESCOM has also come up with the EV MITRA mobile app that is meant to help electric vehicle drivers to find and track nearest EV charging stations.

BESCOM is on forefront for the development of EV charging stations in the state to step up pollution-less mobility. It established Karnataka’s first public EV charging station in 2018. As of March, 2023, the southern state had 704 public EV charging stations that were operational. It is second to Delhi only in terms of numbers.
