Indore – the cleanest city of India – is now aspiring to transform into India’s first solar-powered city in less than a year’s time from here. Following a high-level meeting aimed at advancing Indore’s transition to a solar city, Principal Secretary (Energy) Sanjay Dubey informed reporters about the determined timeline.

“We have set an ambitious target of 11 months for ourselves,” he stated after the meeting chaired by Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav.

The meeting was attended by the Principal Secretary for Energy, Indore Divisional Commissioner Mal Singh, West Discom Managing Director Amit Tomar, Collector Asheesh Singh, Municipal Commissioner Harshika Singh, Indore Smart City CEO Divyank Singh, and other top officials.

Post-meeting, the Principal Secretary for Energy outlined the immediate plan, saying, “In the next three months, we aim to install approximately 25 to 30 thousand rooftop solar systems in the city. Subsequently, we will diligently work towards achieving the solar city targets in the following months.”

Emphasizing the commitment, he added that all government buildings would be mandated to install solar systems, leveraging increased subsidies and anticipated financial rebates from the central government.

Indore Mayor Bhargav expressed confidence in the community’s ability to surpass expectations, stating, “Indore residents have a habit of meeting targets earlier than expected. The same will happen in the case of the solar city target.”

Amit Tomar, the Managing Director of West Discom, outlined plans for a comprehensive campaign to connect 25,000 existing electricity consumers with the rooftop solar net meter scheme in the next three months. Additionally, he mentioned the installation of solar panels on 1,400 government buildings in the city.

Municipal Commissioner Harshika Singh disclosed an incentive program, stating that those Indore residents installing solar systems on their rooftops would receive a 6% rebate in fees for building maps on plots exceeding 1,500 square feet.

Last year in July, the Indore Municipal Corporation presented a roadmap to step-up solar power in the city to 60-MW. The city wants to develop 300-MW of rooftop solar in the city by 2027. Currently, the installed capacity of Indore hovers around 40-MW.
