Zomato Deliveries To Be 100% Electric Powered by 2030

Gurugram based Food delivery giant, Zomato has taken a key step towards its sustainable future goals. As part of its environmental projects to offset its delivery carbon footprint, Zomato has announced committing to 100 percent adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) for deliveries by 2030, on World Environment Day (June 5). The firm is also on the brink of it’s IPO in India, sometime this year.

The restaurant aggregator has also announced joining a global electric mobility initiative, EV100 by Climate Group. Climate Group is a non-profit international organization, works with business and government leaders around the world to drive climate action fast, with a goal of net-zero carbon emissions in the world by 2050. Moreover, Climate Group’s EV100 is a global initiative bringing together forward-looking companies committed to accelerating the complete transition to EVs.

In its move towards sustainability, Zomato announced funding their local environmental projects to neutralize the carbon footprint of all its deliveries + packaging in India. In this ongoing project, the company wants to actively aid the transition to EVs by enabling the ecosystem – EV players, battery manufacturers, and the government.

Presently, the company delivers approximately 20 percent of its orders on bicycles, and around 35 zero-carbon emitting and pollution-free deliveries in crowded cities like Delhi.

It also claims to be  actively working with a few EV players to design pilots and create business models that could facilitate a faster transition towards a viable mobility solution for deliveries.

Currently, it delivers via EVs in cities such as Delhi, Bangalore, and Mumbai. Speaking of the 100% EV adoption goal, the firm announced that, “The current EV fleet is a small fraction of the active fleet of delivery partners, and we understand that getting to 100% adoption of EVs will not be easy, but is essential in the long run. At the moment, the adoption rate is very low for us and the two-wheeler industry in general.”

“We believe key barriers that currently impact adoption include limited battery range, lack of charging infrastructure, higher upfront costs, and lack of trust in new technology.”

However, given the rapid innovation and positive push by the government towards EV adoption, business firms like Zomato are expected to be early adopters of EV’s. Already, we have seen logistics firms serve as prime targets for EV manufacturers for early traction.
