Minister of State (MoS) of Heavy Industries of India, Krishan Pal Gurjar recently told the Lok Sabha that Uttar Pradesh (UP) continued to host the highest number of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country. This came to the fore when the minister furnished the state-wise list of sales of EVs across India. As per the list, UP seemed to have a lion’s share in EV sales. 

The response of the minister came to the fore when a member of the parliament asked the minister about the status of sales of EVs and hybrid EVs in the country with a focus on sales of EVs in Bihar. Based on the data available on the e-Vahan portal the ministry of road transport & highways shared the data that includes details regarding percentage of hybrid and electric vehicles in use in the country and the total sales.

Based on the shared data in the parliament on the status of electric and hybrid vehicle in use in 2023, it can be found that, the states, those with highest hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) in use are Uttar Pradesh (7.75, 537), Maharashtra (5,16,812) Karnataka (3,98, 237), Delhi (3,34,039). Whereas the states with the highest ELECTRIC Battery-Operated Vehicles (BOV) are Uttar Pradesh (6,87,924), Maharashtra (3,79,019) Rajasthan (2,17,939), Tamil Nadu (2,03,802), Bihar (1,99,679) Gujarat (1,69,802)  

The minister also talked about several other schemes that helped in increased deployment of EVs in India. “Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India): The Government notified Phase-II of FAME India Scheme initially for a period of 5 years w.e.f. 01st April, 2019 with a total budgetary support of Rs. 10,000 crores. Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Automobile and Auto Component Industry: The Government on 15th September, 2021 approved the PLI Scheme for Automotive Sector with a budgetary outlay of Rs. 25,938 crores. The scheme provides incentives up to 18% for electric
vehicles.”
