Tesla will be building a Megapack energy storage battery plant in China. The EV maker battery plant will come up near its electric vehicle gigafactory in Shanghai. According to a report, Tesla will invest around CNY1.5 billion (USD200 million) in the new megafactory.

The factory will cover an area of about 20 hectares in the Lingang Special Area. Further, Tesla plans to start construction this month and achieve mass production in the first quarter of next year. The company aims to produce 10,000 Megapacks a year, equal to about 40 gigawatt hours of energy storage.

According to Tesla, Megapack is a powerful battery that provides energy storage and support, helping to stabilize the grid and prevent outages. Megapacks use renewable energy to supplement and ensure local electricity supply in many areas of North America, Asia-Pacific regions, and Europe. Megapack delivers more power and reliability at a lower cost over its lifetime. Each battery module is paired with its inverter for improved efficiency and increased safety. With over-the-air software updates, Megapack gets better over time.

Megapack stores energy for the grid reliably and safely, eliminating the need for gas peaker plants and helping to avoid outages. Each unit can store over 3.9 MWh of energy—that’s enough energy to power an average of 3,600 homes for one hour, claims Tesla.

The deal to build a megafactory with Lingang New Area was signed on April 9 last year.

Tesla’s first Megafactory became operational in 2022. It is located in Lathrop, California. It has the capacity of 40 GWh of batteries per year.

Another Megapack battery system from Tesla will be replacing Hawaii’s very last coal power plant. The project, called Kapolei Energy Storage, is located on the industrial west side of Oahu and consists of a massive 185MW/565MWh Tesla Megapack system.

Tesla will also be building, what it says, the world’s largest Megapack, just outside of Melbourne under the banner of Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub. When completed, it will consist of three battery systems totaling 600 MW/1.6 GWh of capacity. The construction of the project will be completed by the end of 2025.
