The two companies of the Tata Group – Tata Motors and Tata Power – have announced that they have entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the development of a 7 MW captive solar power project at its Pantnagar plant in Uttarakhand. According to the company, this installation is collectively expected to generate 215 million units of electricity. The companies held that this energy is enough to mitigate more than 1.7 lakh tonnes of carbon emission.

The said savings in emissions is equivalent to planting more than 2.72 lakh teak trees over a lifetime. Anal Vijay Singh, Plant Head of Pantnagar Plant, Tata Motors, stated, “Having won several awards, our Pantnagar plant has always been lauded for its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to achieve net-zero emission goal. The plant has been recognized across the industry for its long-successful energy conservation measures. With this agreement, we will further strengthen our journey towards a cleaner and greener future.”

Tata Motors manufactures Tata Ace – the mini one-tonne truck – and its variants at Pantnagar facility which is spread across 1,000 acres in Uttarakhand’s State Industrial Development Corporation (SIDCUL).

In September, Tata Motors and Tata Power had also entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to develop a 4 MWp on-site solar project at Tata Motors’ Pune commercial vehicle manufacturing facility. The companies called it a significant step towards building a resilient and sustainable future and the installation is collectively expected to generate 5.8 million units of electricity. Even this would potentially mitigate more than 10 lakh tonnes of carbon emission which is equivalent to planting over 16 lakh teak trees over a lifetime.

Last year, Tata Power Solar Systems Limited announced the significant expansion of its manufacturing facility in Bengaluru which took the total production capacity of cells and modules to 1,100 MW. The company held that the expansion was based on the significant increase in demand that the company has seen for its solar modules due to supportive policy steps announced recently by the Government of India for creating ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ or Self-Reliant India.
