Tata Power to Expand Rajasthan RE Portfolio to 10-GW in Five Years

Energy conglomerate Tata Power has revealed in an industry event that the company is looking to expand its renewable energy based portfolio in the resource abundant state of Rajasthan. The company has said during the Invest Rajasthan summit that it wants to develop about 10GW of renewable energy in the state in the coming five years.

Tata Power and its fully owned subsidiary, Tata Power Solar, will be developing 8 GW of utility-scale RE projects, 1 GW of rooftop solar projects and also step-up its solar pump installations in Rajasthan by 2027. The energy giant wants to install 1,50,000 solar pumps in five years. The expansion will generate additional employment for about 6000 – 8000 workers.

Praveer Sinha, Chief Executive Officer, Tata Power, said, “Both in terms of potential and what has been done so far, Rajasthan has today emerged as a role model to produce green energy through solar power.”

Sinha also added, “With its already strong footprint in the state, Tata Power is fully poised to make Rajasthan future-ready and realise its full potential and emerge as a green power house of the country. We will continue to build on all three business – EPC, solar pump and solar rooftop – to the benefit of farmers, industries and common citizens of this frontier state.”

In the first half of 2022, Rajasthan installed the highest capacity of solar energy and contributed about 5GWp to Tata Power’s renewable energy portfolio. The company had installed some of the key RE projects in the state recently. In August it commissioned a 225 MW hybrid energy project and a 160 MW solar power plant previously, taking the total RE projects commissioned in Rajasthan alone to 2,066 MW.

Moreover, 2,873 MW of solar power projects are being developed in Rajasthan that will be completed in one to two years.

The Expansion Spree

Recently, Tata Power inked an MoU with the Tamil Nadu Government to set up a 4GW solar cell and 4GW solar module factory in the southern state. Tata Power is also one of the players that will develop RUSML’s 750 MW hybrid renewable energy project having a work award for 200 MW.

Tata Power Solar had recently received a letter of award (LoA) from SJVN Ltd a month ago to build a 100 MW ground-mounted solar project in Gujarat’s Raghanesda solar park.
