Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme Sanctioned in Ladakh at Rs 687.05 Cr

The Government has given its nod for the implementation of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The scheme been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 687.05 crore.

Towards this, an agreement has been signed between the Chief Engineer, Distribution, Ladakh Power Development Department (LPDD), Tsewang Paljor and Executive Director WAPCOS (earlier known as Water and Power Consultancy Services (India) Limited) Limited, A K Gahlot. Administrative Secretary Power, Ladakh, Ravinder Kumar also marked his presence. WAPCOS is an undertaking under the Government of India.

The scheme will entail the the grid connectivity of the Changthang region, downline infrastructure in the Zanskar region. It will also include other loss reduction works in the Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh. In the same breath, the Union Ministry of Power has also given its nod appointing WAPCOS as the project management agency (PMA) towards the implementation of RDSS in Ladakh.

The RDSS has set sights on improving operational efficiencies and financial sustainability. It aims to achieve this by providing result-linked financial assistance to DISCOMs for strengthening of supply infrastructure based on meeting pre-qualifying criteria and achieving basic minimum benchmarks.

The Centre has been proactively giving a push to the energy sector in Ladakh. In a major announcement, the green energy transmission corridor is being planned from Ladakh to Haryana.
