Over 1100 MUs of Green Power Procured During FY22-23 By Railway Energy Management Company Sembcorp Awards 50.4 MW Wind Power Project to Suzlon

Railways around the world are stepping up efforts towards decarbonization and accelerating the employment of renewable sources of energy. Indian Railways have set sights on becoming a net zero emitter by 2030.

The Railway Energy Management Company Ltd (REMCL), is a joint venture between RITES Ltd and the Indian Railways. REMCL is the nodal agency aimed at the planning, tendering / bid processing and implementation of renewable energy projects on behalf of the Indian Railways.  It recently signed an MoU with Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (HRIDC) was signed for assessment of opportunities in solar power on vacant unused available land parcels.

There are a slew of renewable projects in the REMCL pipeline.

Currently, a 50 MW ground -mounted solar power plant utilizing surplus vacant railway land at Bhilai in Chhattisgarh over South East Central Railway has been established. The project is commissioned and final testing is in progress. The power flow is likely to commence by first week of April 2023 to the beneficiary states of Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.

It has also purchased 500 MW solar power through IRCON- a Government of India undertaking under the Ministry of Railways. It will start generating power during FY 2024-25. During the said time span,  800 MW solar power project through BSUL Mega Solar Park (1200 MW) at Orai and Madhogarh, Uttar Pradesh will commence the flow of power.

400 MW Solar Power is being procured through Rewa Ulta Mega Solar Ltd (mega solar park- 1500 MW) at Agar, Shajapur and Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh. Power flow is slated for FY 2023-24.

As far as wind power projects are concerned, REMCL has been procuring power from 93 MW wind power projects set up under Capex/RESCO mode. It recently awarded a 50 MW of wind power contract to Green Infra Wind Energy Ltd. It would supply power in Maharashtra. This is to be commissioned during FY 2024-25. In addition to this, 100 MW capacity Round the Clock renewable power is also being procured through SECI where ReNew is the renewable power developer. This is expected to generate power during FY 2023-24.

REMCL has also procured green power through  Green Day Ahead Market on IEX for the states availing power in Open Access. More than 1100 MUs of green power have been procured during FY 2022-23 (upto Feb’2023) by REMCL.

Currently, in order to meet the specific and continuous power requirements of Railways, REMCL has issued a tender for the procurement of 1000 MW renewable Power in RTC (Round The Clock) mode.
