Trina Solar Rolls 210 mm N-Type i-TOPCon Cells Off Production Line Global Cleantech Firm Trina Solar Is Back On BNEF's Tier 1 List

Leading firm that delves into research and development of PV products, EPC and O&M, Trina Solar has rolled 210 mm n-type i-TOPCon cells off the production line in its 8 GW capacity factory in Suqian, Jiangsu province.

Th said n-type cells will be employed to produce new generation Vertex N modules. The power output will be up to 605 W with efficiency reaching 22.4%. The firm says that the full-scale production will guarantee delivery while improving  competitiveness and creating greater value for customers.

The establishment of the 8 GW 210mm n-type i-TOPCon cell factory in Suqian spreads to close to 70,000 square meters. The construction of the facility kicked off in July last year. The manufacturing equipment was installed at November-end. By December 30, 2022, the factory was up and running and fully operational. Trina Solar maintains that advanced technology is being employed on the production line including for quality control.

The production line, mainly used for producing 210 mm n-type i-TOPCon cells, used for the newly launched Vertex N 605W modules, capitalises on the innovative cell size and low-voltage, making the Vertex N 605 W modules a good fit for 104-meter-long trackers. Besides, there is no waste of space involved

6 to 12 more modules can be connected on the trackers as opposed to the conventional n-type 72-cell and 78-cell modules. The Vertex N 605W modules are thus compatible with trackers. They further help diminish BOS costs.

p-type vs n-type, upcoming trends in n-type

The commercialisation of n-type cells began last year and they are a promising invention as p-type PERC nears efficiency limits. Trina Solar set sights on developing n-type cell technology seven years ago. In 2016, the firm built utility-scale n-type empirical base in Menghe, Jiangsu province. Additionally, it also delivered a total of 500MW i-TOPCon modules for two top runner projects in Tongchuan, Shaanxi province, and Changzhi, Shanxi province, in 2019. In 2021, continuing on the spree, it established a pilot line of 500 MW n-type i-TOPCon modules based on the 210 mm product technology platform. This year, the module capacity of Trina Solar’s 210 mm n-type technology is expected to reach 30 GW.

In the p-type area, 210 mm technology leads the global application of 600 W+ modules becoming an industry-wide global trend. In the new n-type era, 210mm technology and n-type technology will work together to make the most of the advantages of the four keys that unlock low LCOE, namely high power, high efficiency, high energy yield and high reliability.
