Srinagar will be welcoming its first fleet of electric buses soon. The first prototype of the bus has already marked its entry in Srinagar and is all set for a trial run. Srinagar will welcome a total of 100 smart buses, of which, the first 25 to 30 buses will mark their arrival this month. The rest of the buses will arrive by December.

India’s largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles, Tata Motors will be responsible for the supply, operation and maintenance of 100 electric buses each in Jammu and Srinagar. Bus transport technology firm Chalo Mobility will offer consumer technology solutions.

“The trials will start soon after the prototype (model of E-bus) is officially received,” said an official of Jammu Smart City Limited- a special purpose vehicle (SPV) introduced in August 2017.

This is an important move for the city

Features

The electric buses will boast of features such as a panic button, location system, CCTV. They will also include a stop request system and features related to security. In a greener alternative to paper tickets, digital ticketing solution in both smart cities will be available.

At the same time, passengers will get access to tracking buses in real-time along with congestion status and the expected time of arrival.

In 2022, TATA Motors Ltd. and Chalo Mobility Pvt. Ltd. had entered into a partnership aiming at the deployment of 200 electric buses in the capital cities of Jammu & Srinagar.

In October last year, the tender for 200 electric buses had been awarded to Tata Motors. According to Tata Motors, Jammu Smart City Ltd. launched the tender for Jammu and Srinagar.
