Grenergy, Amazon Ink PPA For 469 MWp Solar Energy in Spain

Giving a push to decarbonize its entire business, global ecommerce and cloud giant Amazon has stated that it has signed a new power purchase agreement in Spain for the purchase of renewable energy. The long term PPA has been linked with renewables energy developer Grenergy Renovables SL for 469 MWp of solar energy in Spain.

As per the details of the PPA, Amazon will be purchasing about 665 GWh of green electricity every year from Grenergy which said that the arrangement has been done for a period of over ten years.

Amazon will get green electricity from the three solar power projects of Grenergy situated in Spain namely Tabernas (250-MWp), Jose Cabrera (47-MWp) and Ayora (172-MWp). These solar farms will become operational next year.

The PPA with Amazon is the second corporate agreement signed in March by Grenergy Renovables. Recently, it inked a deal with Dutch chemicals multinational LyondellBasell Industries for the supply of 259-MWp solar energy in Spain.

Amazon’s RE Push

The agreement with Grenergy comes just after Amazon signed a PPA with Spanish energy firm Iberdrola under which, two offshore projects of Iberdrola – Baltic Eagle and Windanker – in the Baltic Sea will supply 1.1TWh of green energy every year. .

At the start of the year, Amazon held that it added a capacity of 8.3 GW in 2022 in terms of renewable energy through 133 new projects in 11 countries. The company held that now the total portfolio is over 20 GW which is enough to power 5.3 million U.S. homes—across 401 renewable energy projects in 22 countries.

The tech giant wants to cover 100% of its operations with renewable power by 2025 – five years ahead of its original 2030 target. In 2022 alone, it announced new projects in Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Poland, Singapore, Spain, and the U.S. It also broke ground in Brazil, India, and Indonesia.
