Iberdrola to Supply Over 1 TWh Renewable Power to Amazon €300 Million IFC Loan For Iberdrola To Back Renewables Versus Coal

In a key development that will step-up the decarbonisation of global e-commerce and cloud company Amazon, Spanish energy firm Iberdrola has inked its largest ever power purchasing agreement (PPA) under which it will develop large-scale renewable energy projects along with Amazon.

The PPA is signed for the Iberdrola renewable energy projects – new wind and solar power – based in the USA, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Amazon is striving to put its global operations completely on green energy by the middle of this decade though the deadline in its plan is 2030.

Under the scheme of things, two offshore projects of Iberdrola – Baltic Eagle and Windanker – in the Baltic Sea will supply 1.1TWh of green energy to Amazon every year. This amount of renewable power is enough to provide yearly electricity to 314,000 households in Europe.

Baltic Eagle, with a capacity of 476 MW, will have 50 wind turbines of 9.53 MW of unit power on monopiles, for an annual production of 1.9 TWh, sufficient to avoid the emission of almost one million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere every year. Iberdrola will complete it in 2024.

Windanker has a planned investment of EUR 800 million by Iberdrola and will reach an installed capacity of 300 MW after its commissioning in 2026.

Iberdrola says that the two offshore projects are its second and third largest ones globally. The Baltic Hub will have a total capacity of 1100 MW which will make it one of the largest offshore wind clusters in the region.

Iberdrola said that it will also employ Amazon Web Services (AWS) for cloud services that will support smarter grids, customer engagement and connected clean power.

Ignacio Galán, executive chairman. Iberdrola, said, “The challenge of electrifying our energy system to increase our autonomy and reduce emissions requires partnerships between leaders like Iberdrola and Amazon. The agreement today, combining sun, wind, and cloud, will enable new renewable generation capacity around the world and accelerate the digital revolution in the energy sector.”

He also added that AWS technologies will support the digital strategy of Iberdrola to continue increasing the quality of supply and provide cleaner and fully-interconnected energy services for its customers.
