Fractal EMS and You.On Integrate Largest BESS in Brazil

Fractal EMSyou.ONUS based Fractal EMS Inc and You.On have announced that they have completed the integration of the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) in Brazil that has a capacity of The 30 MW/60 MWh. You.On is a Brazil based firm specialising in storage solutions.

The official statement of Fractal EMS held that the BESS project will discharge during high load periods and defer the cost of building an additional transmission line (non-wires alternative) by delivering power at the end of a congested line. Fractal EMS is equipment agnostic, while You.On chose Kehua inverters paired with CATL liquid-cooled batteries.

Fractal EMS said that You.On was the system integrator and was selected through a competitive process. The project is located in Registro, Brazil and is owned by ISA CTEEP. The 30 MW / 60 MWh BESS will improve the resilience of the ISA owned transmission line and will reduce the need to import electricity from peaker plants. The firm provided the controls, HMI, historian, networking and SCADA.

Daniel Crotzer, CEO of Fractal EMS, said, “The energy storage market in Brazil represents a significant growth opportunity. Brazil is the world’s leader in renewable energy, battery storage could propel Brazil to 100% clean energy.”

As per reports the BESS project required an investment of $27 million and the transmission operator could earn $5 million each year from the facility.

The Contractor

Fractal EMS is a fully vertical controls platform that includes software, controllers, integration and analytics that offers full command, control, monitoring and management for solar power and storage projects. Fractal EMS maximizes safety and profitability of storage and hybrid systems. The platform claims to have 4 GWh in operation globally and over 10 GWh of awarded projects.

The energy storage infrastructure development in Brazil is yet to gain speed. Mining company Vale is expected to deploy a 5MW/10 MWh energy storage facility in the country.
