French utility EDF has bagged a 1 GW capacity tender aimed at the development of a wind power farm. The 1 GW wind farm is to be established off the coast of Normandy located in northern France.

France had revealed that it was developing the offshore project in 2019. This offshore wind farm is part of its efforts to augment the employment of renewable energy. Currently, nuclear power accounts for the largest share of electricity production.

EDF bagged the tender along with Maple Power, which is its UK-based partner.

It may be recalled that in 2022, EDF Renewables North America had won a tender for 1 GW of solar and battery storage capacity. The firm had been awarded three large solar projects by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). This was said to be the state’s largest renewable energy procurement (land-based).

More recently, EDF Renewables, a wholly-owned subsidiary of French utility EDF Group, Jan De Nul and Luminus joined hands towards the bidding for an offshore wind tender. It will be for the first phase of the Princess Elisabeth Zone in Belgium. The area has been identified by the government to augment Belgium’s local renewable electricity generation by up to 3.5 GW.

EDF has set sights on expanding its reach globally. Recently, EDF Renewables shared its plan for the proposed 80 MW Kilsallagh wind farm project, which is to be established in Ireland. The firm has also acquired 17 greenfield solar photovoltaic projects with a total capacity of 529 MWp from MEC Energy, a renewable project developer based in Germany.
