50% of Power In Spain Comes From Renewables In April

Span’s national grid operator Red Electrica de Espana has informed in its estimates report that Spain had produced a little over half of its electricity from renewable sources of energy last month. It said that in April the Spanish power coming from clean sources was 50.1 per cent.

It has higher than what was produced in March as the renewable’s productivity in preceding month was 45.4 per cent. One reason for the sudden rise in the renewables supply in the energy mix of Spain is that the demand for electricity across the country fell by about 2 per cent compared with the last year. As per the government data, wind turbines contributes about 25.8% of the total monthly energy output in Spain and it’s the largest energy contributor in Spain.

The Red Electrica de Espana data also shows that demand for power in Spain went down by 2.8% on the year to 18,389 GWh. As far as the Canary Islands archipelago is concerned, there was an increase of in demand of 683,594 MWh which makes up about 11% in annual terms. Similarly, the Balearic Islands’ demand was up by 15% to 435,740 MWh.

Renewable Energy Development in Spain

According to International Energy Agency (IEA), the framework  for energy and climate of Spain is based on the 2050 objectives of national climate neutrality, 100% renewable energy in the electricity mix, and 97% renewable energy in the total energy mix. The 2030 objectives of Spain include a 23% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levles; a 42% share of renewables in energy end use; a 39.5% improvement in energy efficiency; and a 74% share of renewables in electricity generation.

In 2021, the installed renewable power capacity in Spain exceeded 63.7 gigagawatts. Wind power accounted for over 44 percent of the total renewable installed capacity with more than 28 gigawatts. Solar capacity is at 14 GW.
