Honeywell to Supply BESS of 124 MWh to US Virgin Islands

Honeywell will supply VIElectron, its first installation of battery energy storage solutions (BESS) for six solar parks located across the US Virgin Islands. The BESS, which is for a capacity of 124 MWh, will boast an end-to-end battery management system (BMS).

The solar array of 140 MWDC and BESS will help the islands meet 30% of energy consumption by way of renewable sources. The BESS will enable VIElectron to install solar panels across St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John.

Honeywell is key player delving in the energy sector. Earlier during the year, it launched an end-to-end modular system of batteries, named Ionic. The lithium-ion system has been designed for global markets and offers scalability from 700 kWh to 300 MWh capacity. It promises backup for up to two hours at maximum rate of discharge.

Recently, the American multinational also announced bringing EV industry safety solutions to India.

The firm has a portfolio of EV industry safety solutions. It also offers lithium-ion (li-ion) battery safety sensors, which help gauge potential battery fires. The firm’s suite of personal protective equipment (PPE) and gas detection solutions play a crucial role in safeguarding workers who work in EV plants.

VIElectron specializes in the installation of solar farms.

Energy storage in US

2,142MW/6,227MWh of cumulative large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems came online in the third quarter of 2023 in the US. This is a 21% quarter-on-quarter surge and 63% up year-on-year increase, trade body American Clean Power revealed in its Q3 2023 report.

The number of large-scale BESS installations in the third quarter of 2023 already exceed those in the whole year of 2022 in the US.  The Inflation Reduction Act has been a key enabler driving up solar, wind and BESS installations in the country.
