The Bihar Cabinet has now approved the latest Electric Vehicle Policy, aimed at boosting the growth of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in the state. This comes after several rounds of discussions of the provisions of the EV Policy. After getting the approval from the state cabinet, the dealers and consumers of electric vehicles in the state are now all set to get several subsidies and hand-holding support from the government to spur the growth of green vehicles.

Approval of the Bihar Electric Vehicle Policy was among the 23 agendas discussed in the Cabinet meeting.  State Additional Chief Secretary S Siddharth while speaking to the press said that the state has planned to ensure that 15 percent of the total vehicle registrations to come from EVs by 2028. The Cabinet meeting was held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The announcement for the new Bihar Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2023, included the decision for setting up of charging stations for EVs. In this, the Bihar government announced a subsidy of Rs 5,000 for two-wheeler EV. The policy mentions extending benefits to the SC-category beneficiaries with a subsidy support of Rs 7,500 in this category.

The EV policy of the state said that the first 10,000 vehicles will get a subsidy of 75 percent tax rebate on Motor Vehicle Tax. The state government said that the buyers of EVs will also receive 50 percent tax rebate on goods vehicles and three-wheeler passenger vehicles.

It was announced that that 75 percent tax exemption will be given on the first 10,000 vehicles. Additionally, government also shared plans to build charging stations at various institutions. Among slew of announcement, it mentions that the EV policy hopes to set 15% registration of new vehicles in the state by 2028 to be electric. The policy also mandated a 30 percent subsidy on power tariffs for public and semi public charging stations during the first three years of the EV policy.
