Westbridge Renewable Energy Corporation has announced that it has obtained Power Plant and Battery Energy Storage System approval and a Substation Permit and License for the Rose Lynn 1072S Substation from the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC). The project is called Sunnynook Solar + Energy Storage Project. The permission has been sought by the majority owned subsidiary of Westbridge Renewable called Sunnynook Solar Energy.

The Sunnynook Project is the second of five Alberta projects of Westbridge to receive power plant and BESS approval from the AUC and the nods allow Sunnynook to construct and operate the Project. It will be located in Special Area No. 2, Alberta.

Westbridge said that the Project consists of a solar power plant with an approved capacity of up to 270 MWac, BESS with capacity of up to 200 MWh and the Substation. It is anticipated that applications to the AUC relating to interconnection approvals will be filed in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Maggie McKenna, Director and COO, Westbridge  Energy, said, “This achievement, combined with the previously obtained approval for Georgetown, means that we now have secured AUC approval for two out of our five projects in Alberta. We extend our appreciation to the development team for their diligent efforts in making this accomplishment possible.”

Former Approval

In February, Westbridge the received approval for the Red Willow Project which is a solar power project in central Alberta. The Red Willow Project target capacity is 295 MWp solar photovoltaic and 100MW/200MWh of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Alberta, along with Saskatchewan is one of the highest potential solar districts in Canada. Overall, solar capacity in Canada currently stands at 2.4 GW.

Recently, Westbridge has also signed a definitive agreement in connection with the purchase by Metka-EGN, which is a subsidiary of MYTILINEOS Energy & Metals, of a portfolio of five solar projects. These are also located in Alberta, Canada that Westbridge is looking to monetize.
