The manufacturing unit will be established across 100 acres in Karnataka, where it will look at manufacturing lithium-ion cells. Production will kick off in 2025 and there are plans to augment capacity to 10 GW by 2028.

Back in June, IBC had shown interest in making investments in battery production in Karnataka.

This will be an important move for IBC, which offers environmentally friendly, large format, rechargeable lithium-ion cells and batteries, manufactured in the USA, to foray into India.

The agreement will give major impetus to Karnataka’s battery manufacturing plans. “After the realisation of the project, the state would have its second Lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility paving the way for becoming the front runner as a Li-ion battery manufacturing state in the country,” stated Large and Medium Industries Minister M B Patil. This will be a second large-scale plant of its kind in Karnataka. Recently, Log 9 Materials, a Bengaluru-based advanced battery technology solutions company, commissioned India’s first commercial Lithium-ion battery manufacturing line at its Jakkur plant in Bengaluru. It is said to have a production capacity of 50 Megawatt-hour (MwH) annually.
