Founder Elon Musk said the new strategy is adopted because statistics show low usage of charging electric vehicles at homes. He held that providing charging equipment with cars was rather wasteful.

The fresh move of Tesla is in contrast with the market trend where the electric vehicles makers are providing charging equipment and are promoting home based charging to avoid the rush at already insufficient charging facilities. On social media, people also don;t seem to be in favour of the move.

“Usage statistics were super low, so seemed wasteful. On the (minor) plus side, we will be including more plug adapters with the mobile connector kit,” Elon Musk responded to criticism of the Tesla policy on Twitter.

Elon Musk’s new policy is being viewed as a strategy to earn revenue through its large charging network now, where the form has invested massively to expand,  Tesla has been known for providing dual-voltage mobile connectors with its electric vehicles. Now Tesla is offering different value added services that offer charging solutions through its Supercharger Network. Now the Tesla electric vehicle purchasers will have to first buy charging equipment.

Recently, Tesla lowered down the prices of its home-charging station by $75. Under the new scheme of things, the basic Level 1 charging unit is available to customers at $ 275 and the Level 2 home charger could be purchased for $ 400.

The total sales of Tesla electric vehicles in 2021 were about 936,000 units. Its share price rose by about 677 per cent in 2020 alone.

The move by Tesla might seem counter-intuituive, but is probably not as left field as it seems. Besides the actual usage statistics, home charging in 4 wheelers is clearly a case of a feature that is seen as more desirable than actually useful. Not only to stats bear this out, but also consumer behaviour in many other product categories.
