With an aim to generate electricity from renewable energy sources, UK-based Company TechnipFMC has taken up a CSR initiative to install a solar power system at a school in Tamil Nadu.

TechnipFMC in India would install solar power system of 6 kW under CSR program ‘Seed of Hope’ at Morning Start High School in Karur district of Tamil Nadu. Founded in 1960, the school is run by Karur Lions Club Charitable Trust and provides education to children from less privileged sections of society.

D Manohar Devadoss, Chief Operating Officer of Technip, India Limited’s Chennai office, said, “Fossil fuels are used as the main source of energy throughout the world but it is fast depleting and is also a threat to our planet, which is leading to global warming. The world has started looking at alternate sources of energy and our country is endowed with vast solar energy potential, which is a renewable energy yet to be tapped. Keeping this in mind, when the school approached us with a request for installation of solar power grid, we readily agreed to take up the project under our CSR programme to provide a sustainable solution, meeting the energy requirement of the school.”

In this system, electricity produced from rooftop solar panels is exported to the grid and adjusted against the electricity drawn from the grid for calculating the electricity charges. After the installation of the grid meter by TNEB in August 2017, electricity from solar power is being used by the school on a continuous basis.

“Since the installation of the solar power system, the electricity bill for the school has come down significantly considering the credit given by TNEB for export of surplus power to the grid. We are grateful to TechnipFMC for providing a sustainable and permanent solution to our power requirements, said Lion N Karuppusamy, Secretary of school.
