Norway’s International Power Producer Statkraft has entered into a PPA with Sweden’s biopharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca towards energy procurement from three wind farms in Sweden.

The PPA is based on the commissioning of the new wind farms in Strömstad and Årjäng, which is in Sweden’s bidding area 3 (SE3). This is also where AstraZeneca’s research and manufacturing facilities are located as well.

Rabbalshede Kraft, which will look into the operation of the farms, also owns them.

The agreement paves the way for AstraZeneca to buy 200GWh annually for a decade. This equates to two terawatt-hours and is almost 80% of the company’s cumulative electricity demand at its research unit in Gothenburg and  Södertälje’s manufacturing facility. The biopharmaceutical firm has been employing 100% certified renewable energy for a few years. By way of an agreement with Statkraft, the firm will augment access to renewable energy in the community it operates in.

President of AstraZeneca for Sweden, Per Alfredsson stated, “We want to contribute to the green transition in society. It is important for us to support initiatives that increase the availability of renewable energy. To successfully mitigate climate change, we must collaborate across different sectors and think beyond our own operations. Here we see an opportunity to contribute to the increase of renewable energy in society.” Hallvard Granheim, Executive Vice President markets at Statkraft, said, “We are very pleased to support this ambitious initiative for a sustainable transition. This agreement confirms the role of Statkraft as a leading supplier of renewable energy to Nordic industries and our ambition to be a leading market integrator in the energy system.”

Earlier, Statkraft secured a contract from the Federal Network Agency, the German regulatory authority, to construct a solar power plant coupled with battery storage in Zerbst, Germany. This opportunity emerged following the authority’s announcement of tenders in May 2023. Additionally, in May 2023, Statkraft, in partnership with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), emerged as the winner of an auction for a 500 MW offshore wind project in Ireland. Located in the North Irish Sea Array (NISA) off the eastern coast near Dublin, Louth, and Meath, this offshore wind farm is expected to provide electricity to approximately 500,000 homes and businesses in Ireland.
