Solarium Green Energy Ltd, a rooftop solar company in India, said on Tuesday it plans to re-enter solar module manufacturing with a 1 gigawatt (GW) production facility in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This comes months after the listing of the firm on the Indian stock exchange. The firm entered the stock exchange on February 13 this year.

As per the plan, the company will invest about ₹70 crore ($8.4 million) in capital expenditure for the plant, which will be equipped with fully automated machinery and advanced technologies, including TOPCon cells, half-cut cells, and bifacial modules. The investment will be funded through a debt-to-equity ratio of 3:1.

Boosting Backward Integration

The move marks Solarium’s backward integration strategy to reduce supply chain dependency and improve project margins. Solar modules typically account for 50–60% of the cost of an EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) solar project.

“The in-house facility is expected to improve project execution speed and protect against cost volatility,” the company said in a statement.

Chairman and Managing Director Ankit Garg said the plant, operating at 85% capacity, could generate over ₹1,000 crore in annual revenue if modules are sold to external customers. He added that using the modules for captive projects could improve project margins by 5%–8% by eliminating third-party markups.

Mounting Structures

Solarium also plans to begin manufacturing solar mounting structures at its existing facility in Bavla, Gujarat. The company recently partnered with WattPower Systems to expand distribution of solar inverters across Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The Ahmedabad module facility is expected to begin commercial operations in the fourth quarter of the current financial year. Any surplus capacity, after meeting internal requirements, will be used to supply other EPC and B2B clients, the company said.

Solarium said the investment would enhance its competitiveness in government (B2G) and commercial (B2B) tenders and increase its ability to secure large-scale projects.

Founded in 2018, Solarium offers turnkey solar EPC solutions and claims to have installed over 65 MW of residential rooftop capacity across 18,000 homes. The company also has a portfolio of over 35 MW in commercial and industrial rooftop projects and more than 30 MW in ground-mounted installations.
