Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries has joined hands with two Japan-based firms for the production of green ammonia in India. The green ammonia produced will be supplied to Japan.

The green hydrogen arm of Sembcorp, called Sembcorp Green Hydrogen Pte, has forged agreements with conglomerate Sojitz Corp and energy major Kyushu Electric Power for the exploration of opportunities for green ammonia.

In November, Sembcorp had announced planned investment to the tune of S$10.5 billion ($7.88 billion). This accounts for close to 75% of its cumulative investments from 2024 to 2028 aimed at giving a push to renewables in line with the firm’s ambition to curb carbon emissions by 50% by 2028.

Further, the partnership will also the pave for Sembcorp to augment its portfolio in India. At present, it boasts a gross renewable portfolio of 3.7 GW in the country. Recently, Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp), through its wholly owned renewables subsidiary Green Infra Wind Energy Limited (GIWEL), received a Letter of Award (LOA) for a 300 MW Inter State Transmission System connected solar project. The project had been won by way of competitive bidding and has been awarded by NHPC. Earlier in the year, Sembcorp had participated in and won a bid by the Railway Energy Management Company Limited (REMCL) for a wind energy project of 50.4 MW capacity.

Other than this, some major projects in Sembcorp portfolio include a 400 MW solar power project and a 180 MW wind power project contracted with SECI, 164 MW RE projects contracted with commercial & industrial (C&I) customers, a 64 MW solar asset in Gujarat acquired as part of the Vector Green portfolio.

In another recent announcement, Green Infra Wind Energy Limited (GIWEL), another wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp, said it was set to acquire 100% of the share capital in two special purpose vehicles (SPVs). These SPVs own 228 MW worth of wind farms in the states of Madya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
