The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) claimed that 18.3 percent of India’s total solar energy capacity was contributed by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The information was given by the Union New and Renewable Energy Minister RK Singh in his written reply before the Lok Sabha.

The minister said that in 2022-23, SECI’s projects generated 35.7 million units (MU) of solar power, while projects installed under SECI’s tariff/VGF-based competitive bids generated 23,207 MU. The total solar power traded by SECI from projects installed under SECI’s tariff/VGF-based competitive bids in the last nine years stood at 70,898 MU.

Based on a total of 13,023 MW installed solar capacity by SECI, it is estimated that approximately 45,000 direct and full-time equivalent jobs were also created through its solar projects.

“SECI has also established transparent and competitive bidding mechanisms which have resulted in RE tariffs being discovered lower than the Average Power Purchase Cost (APPC) of most of the DISCOMs across the country. This has resulted in a supply of affordable power to local communities across the States,” the minister said.

The minister said that SECI has also implemented other initiatives for decentralized solar applications, which benefited the local communities like the empanelment of vendors for setting up more than 6 lakh solar pumps under the PM-KUSUM Scheme (Component-B), selection of vendors for 5 lakh solar urja lamp kits on behalf of IIT Bombay, electrification of 1058 off-grid villages in Arunachal Pradesh through 300kWp solar power packs under Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojana and installation of 100 solar street lights and 50 fox lights in the fringe area of Karikot village in Katerniaghat wildlife sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh.

“SECI continues to play a crucial role in the growth of distributed generation of solar power. As Central Nodal Agency for Grid Connected Roof Top Phase –II, SECI has disbursed, approximately Rs. 117 Cr. to more than 20,000 beneficiaries through the National Solar Rooftop Portal since its launch. It has also disbursed a total amount of Rs. 1607 crore to the various discoms as incentives as well as CFA for further onward disbursement to vendors,” the minister said.
