Saudi Arabia has issued a tender inviting bids for solar projects under four new PV initiatives.  Together these initiatives will account for solar energy worth 3.7 GW under the National Renewable Energy Programme (NREP). The Saudi tender has been issued by Government-owned entity, Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC).

The Saudi tender’s RFQ encompasses four projects, namely, Al Sadawi plant located in the eastern part, boasting 2 GW; Al Masa’a project in northern Hail province with 1 GW capacity. The remaining projects are the 400 MW Al Henakiyah 2 plant in western Madinah province and the 300 MW (AC) Rabigh 2 in western Makkah province.

Saudi Power Procurement Company will be responsible for overseeing projects and look after predevelopment, tendering and the energy offtake that will follow.

The four projects under the Saudi tender will play a crucial role in Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy landscape since they make up a substantial part of the cumulative energy capacity of 12.6 GW awarded under NREP, the National Renewable Energy Program.

The government of Saudi Arabia has set sights on achieving 27.5 GW of renewable energy by the end of the decade. This is a rather ambitious goal chalked out by the desert country, given that its installed capacity stood at about 390 MW when 2022 came to a close. This estimate was provided by the International Renewable Energy Association (IRENA).

Back in September, the Saudi Power Procurement Company had revealed the shortlisted developers who will build solar projects won as part of the fourth round of the National Renewable Energy Program. The projects will ring in investments that are over 4 Billion Saudi Riyals.

Each project will be on a Build, Own, and Operate (BOO) basis by a project company.

Presently, the Saudi Power Procurement Company has allocated renewable energy projects of more than 11 GW under the National Renewable Energy Program.
