RWE Partners with Stanwell Corporation for 1.8 GW Onshore Wind in Australia ORIT Launches 50 MW Onshore Wind Farm in Scotland for Kimberly Clark

German multinational energy firm headquartered in Essen that generates and trades electricity in the Asia-Pacific region, and delves into offshore wind power generation, RWE has joined hands with power provider Stanwell Corporation. The two firms have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for two Queensland onshore wind projects. These will boast an aggregate capacity of up to 1800 MW.

The MoU will pave the way for Stanwell to undertake investigation and assessment of energy offtakes and potential equity investment in Theodore Wind Farm of RWE. The wind farm is project of up to 1100 MW currently in the stages of development. The wind farm is said to generate ample electricity to power up 410,000 homes. It will also chalk out over 500 jobs during peak construction periods along with up to 50 jobs during the 35-year operations of the project. At the same time, it will also consider a second wind farm of up to 720 MW capacity in early-stage development in the southern part of Queensland.

The said projects are slated for completion and kickstart operations by 2029.

Markus Krebber, Chief Executive of RWE, stated, “RWE is excited to be partnering with Stanwell on these two major projects and assisting Queensland to achieve their renewable energy ambitions.” He added, “RWE sees Australia as a very attractive renewable energy growth market and we are looking forward to working on developing the proposed Theodore Wind Farm. We are committed to increasing our presence in the Australian market, and the signing of this memorandum of understanding with Stanwell for Theodore, and another of our Queensland projects, is a demonstration of this commitment.”

Michael O’Rourke, chief executive of Stanwell, remarked, “We are thrilled to partner with RWE on two such significant projects. An additional 1.8GW of clean energy by 2029 represents a major boost in our rapidly growing portfolio of renewable energy projects.” He concluded, “This is a win-win agreement for the energy industry, Queensland and our commercial and industrial customers who want clean, reliable, and affordable energy to power their businesses. And it strengthens Queensland’s position to deliver on the targets set out in the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan, bringing more investment and jobs into our regional communities.”

Earlier, RWE said that it had strengthened its position in the German offshore wind market as it became the sole owner of 1.6-GW cluster of offshore wind farms in the German North Sea. The Nordseecluster, consisting of four sites located north of the island of Juist, was formerly co-developed with Canadian company Northland Power, which has now sold its 49% shareholding in the cluster to RWE.
