Rooftop Solar Adoption Spurred Energy-Conscious Behaviour: Report By Saur News Bureau/ Updated On Thu, Jun 5th, 2025 Rooftop Solar Adoption Spurred Energy-Conscious Behaviour: Report A latest report jointly produced by the Uttar Pradesh Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) and energy think tank Vasudha Foundation claimed that the adoption of rooftop solar in Varanasi led to boosting energy-conscious behaviour among the prosumers. The report took a deep dive to understand the socio-economic impact of the adoption of rooftop solar in Varanasi. The report was based on a survey of 1,013 households. Under the ₹75,021-crore national programme, Varanasi has seen 12,086 rooftop solar systems installed as of April 2025, with more than 57,800 applications submitted. The total installed rooftop capacity in the city has increased by 35 percent between January and April, reaching 43,678 kW. Researchers from the report told Saur Energy that it busted the myth that prosumers who opt for solar energy are inclined to increase their energy consumption. The report, in fact, revealed that opting for solar made the solar consumers more conscious towards judiciously using electricity. “Adoption of solar rooftop systems fostered energy-conscious behaviours in nearly 60 percent of households. 60.4 percent of households observed increased interest among children in renewable energy and environmental issues,” the report revealed. 4,500 Jobs Created The Prime Minister’s rooftop solar initiative has created more than 4,500 jobs in Varanasi alone, with a mix of skilled (55 percent) and semi-skilled (45 percent) roles, according to the new survey assessing the local impact of the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGY). The findings reveal substantial financial relief for households, with average monthly electricity savings of ₹2,972. This translates to annual savings of ₹35,664 and lifetime savings exceeding ₹8.9 lakh per household. The average payback period for solar system investments is 3.8 years. Beyond financial benefits, the scheme has contributed to improved quality of life. Some 77.4 percent of beneficiaries reported feeling a positive shift due to reduced power bills and improved electricity access. Nearly 90 percent of the prosumers said they would recommend solar to others, with cost savings and environmental benefits as key motivators. Higher Subsidies The scheme, which targets 1 crore rooftop installations by FY 2026-27, offers generous subsidies—up to 73 percent of costs for 2 kW systems in Uttar Pradesh when central and state incentives are combined. The primary reason for adoption, cited by 83 percent of respondents, was the need to cut electricity expenses. The report recommends expanding community awareness efforts, such as solar camps, to drive uptake and replicate Varanasi’s success in other regions.
