Research Institute ORERI To Be Established In Odisha For Renewable Energy

The state of Odisha will soon be witnessing the coming up of ‘The Odisha Renewable Energy Research Institute (ORERI)’ for the purpose of stepping up research and development work regarding technology for the renewable energy sources. ORERI will be set up in Sonepur district to make Odisha a leader in the field of renewables.

ORERI will also be the first dedicated Research Institute in Odisha that will specifically delve into key areas of sustainability like renewable energy, environmental sciences, sustainability, circular economy, waste management and climate change.

The Objective of the institute is to realise the clean energy future of India and raise the stature of Odisha as far as renewable energy is concerned in India. ORERI will also give training to future experts in the clean energy field. It will also offer novel innovative technologies that are developed by RE experts to the industrial sector.

This is for the first time that a world class institute is being established in Odisha that will see experts coming from academia, industry and the government.

Dr Sanjib Kumar Karmee, Founder and Director of ORERI, informed, “The main objective for renewable energy deployment in India is to advance economic progress, improve energy security, improve access to clean energy, affordability and mitigate climate change. Recently, India has announced that it aims to reach net zero emissions by 2070. This is a significant step for the fight against climate change.”

Dr Karmee also added, “In this context, ORERI will perform cutting-edge research on developing renewable energy technologies and their field implementation to mitigate climate change.” He said that ORERI will perform pilot project demonstrations and help incubation centres for start-ups and entrepreneurs.

The Odisha government has come up with the Renewable Energy Policy 2022 under which it wants to increase the renewable energy installed capacity to 10,000 MW by 2030. At present, the state has a little above 600 MW of green energy installed capacity.
