According to the agreement, ReNew will produce 150 MW of clean energy from a recently commissioned solar site near Bikaner. This deal signifies that corporates globally, including India, are increasingly integrating renewable energy into their operations in every form, and this partnership further paves the way for innovative models that will accelerate the energy transition.

Sumant Sinha, Chairman and CEO, ReNew Power, commented on the agreement, "ReNew Power is delighted and proud to partner with Microsoft, known for its sensitivity towards environment, sustainable business practices, and as global climate leader in the corporate world. This venture will help contribute towards Microsoft's ambition of shifting to 100 percent supply of renewable energy by 2025."

Dr Rohini Srivathsa, National Technology Officer, Microsoft India, said, " We are happy to partner with ReNew Power to meet our sustainability targets, and to also help our customers and partners on their sustainability journey."

ReNew Power signed a similar agreement with Jindal Stainless to establish a utility-scale captive renewable energy project – having both solar and wind facilities - for the delivery of electricity to their factory in Jajpur, Odisha. The project will generate 700 million units of green energy every year.

ReNew Power is an independent power producer (IPP) that develops, builds, owns, and operates wind, solar and hydro projects for the supply of power to utilities and corporates in India and overseas. As of September 30, 2022, ReNew had a gross total portfolio of 13.4 GW of renewable energy projects across India including commissioned and committed projects.

Microsoft’s RE Quest

Microsoft is striving to run 100% on renewable energy by 2025 and turn carbon negative by 2030. It recently signed an agreement with Google to lower the carbon footprint in their IT operations with employment of renewable energy. It also announced that it has found hydrogen fuel cells to be better alternatives that power its datacentres as its trial run in Latham (New York) was found to be successful.
