Pakistan-based power project developer Oracle Power has signed a memorandum of understanding with China Electric Power and Technology (CET)- a wholly-owned subsidiary of State Grid Corporation of China. They will explore the development, financing, construction, operation as well as maintainence of a green hydrogen project to be set up in Pakistan.

The said project will be established in Thatta, in the Sindh Province. It will entail hybrid renewables along with storage facility. The project will bring together  solar capacity worth 700 MW and wind capacity worth 500 MW. The project will also boast of battery storage.

Once put into operation, the project would generate 150,000 kg of hydrogen on a daily basis, making it among the largest such projects in Asia.

Work related to gauging the feasiblility of the project and the potential production of green hydrogen and green ammonia began towards the end of 2022. This work was undertaken with German engineering firm, Thyssenkrupp. The initial results are slated for the second quarter of 2023.

The MoU is the result of an acquisition by Oracle of state land through a thirty-year lease with Sindh Government. The land package is for about 28.3 sq km.

Sheikh Ahmed Dalmook Al Maktoum, who has an ownership of 70% in Oracle Energy, said about the MoU, “Having acquired the required land to build the project late in 2022, and having made significant progress in planning the construction of the Green Hydrogen Production facility with Thyssenkrupp, Oracle Energy is looking to fast-track the development of the project by partnering with one of the world’s leading companies, which has both financing capability, as well as significant experience of constructing large power projects globally.” He concludes, “We look forward to working closely with CET and our other world class partners in maintaining this extraordinary momentum as we fulfil our stated strategy of being primarily focused on green energy development.”

The firm revealed in stock market filing last year that the Sindh state government of Pakistan has accorded ‘comprehensive permission’ to Oracle for the development of a 400 MW green hydrogen project.  The carbon-free hydrogen facility will be supplied with electricity by 500 MW of wind energy and 700 MW of solar facilities that will be supported with an energy battery system, it was revealed in August 2022.
