Energy conglomerate NTPC Limited and the Meghalaya Government have entered into various agreements to augment renewable power in Meghalaya.

The MoUs entail Power Portfolio Management Services (PMS) for Meghalaya DISCOM. The agreements will also pave the way for the establishment of Pump Storage Power Plants (PSPs), as well as floating solar projects in the state. The potential of small hydro projects will also be looked into.

Additionally, the MoUs emphasize the development of Pump Storage Power Plant (PSPs) and the deployment of Floating Solar projects in Meghalaya. It may be recalled that the Central Electricity Authority had issued norms for field efficiency tests for PSPs.

The partnership also aims at exploring the untapped potential on the small hydro projects while also exploring the viability of establishment of PSPs to generate electricity. The water will be repumped to reservoirs such as Umiam to help meet peak demand. It will also explore the possibility of setting up floating solar power units in Umiam and other water bodies.

As per an official statement, the PMS MoU between the Meghalaya government and NTPC Limited in New Delhi will streamline the management and operations of Meghalaya Discom, ensuring efficient distribution of power and improved service delivery to the people. The agreement also sets sights on improving the power portfolio management of Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL).This will be achieved through the manpower and expertise of NTPC. At the same time, it is said to lead to judicious utilization of power resources of MeECL while enhancing the power mix with renewable energy. The transmission losses will also be curbed and power infrastructure enhanced by way of the partnership.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said about the partnership, “The signing of the MoU will go a long way in improving the overall power scenario of the state. Our commitment to enhancing power connectivity in Meghalaya is reflected in these positive interventions.”

Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal also said that the partnership will help address the power challenges confronted by Meghalaya.

Recently, NTPC Green Energy Limited shared its intention to venture into offshore business in India.
