NTPC Green Energy Limited recently signed a pact with the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) to develop renewable energy parks, floating solar, and other solar projects in Uttar Pradesh through a collaborative approach.

The green arm of the NTPC said that the move would likely boost the company to facilitate the Indian government’s efforts toward energy transition. Both institutions have now signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work towards the direction jointly.

The MoU was signed by Mohit Bhargava, CEO (NGEL), and Nidhi Kumar Narang, Director (Finance), UPRVUNL, in the presence of P. Guruprasad, MD (UPRVUNL), Praveen Saxena, Regional Executive Director (NR) of NTPC and others.

As per the mandate of the MoU, the two organizations will collaborate to set up a floating solar plant in the Rihand reservoir. They will also work to boost the scope of floating solar on other water bodies based on space availability and feasibility. Plans are also afoot to develop a ground-mounted solar project to give an impetus to the solarization of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh.

The MoU also talks about setting up Renewable Energy Parks and projects wherever land is available. Moreover, NGEL and UPRVUNL will jointly work to form a Joint Venture Company (JVC) to meet the Renewable Generation Obligation (RPO), Flexibility in the Generation and Scheduling of Thermal/Hydro Power Stations through bundling with Renewable Energy and Energy Storage.

NTPC is India’s largest power utility, with a total installed capacity of about 72 GW (including JVs and subsidiaries). UPRVUNL was, meanwhile, constituted to set up and operate power-generating stations in Uttar Pradesh. UPRVUNL currently has four thermal power stations within Uttar Pradesh with an installed capacity of 5820 MW and one thermal power station with an installed capacity of 1320 MW under JV with NTPC.

Recently, NTPC and NGEL have signed several MoUs to step into several untouched areas to work together. For example, in March this year, it signed an MoU with the Indian Army to establish Green Hydrogen at its establishments. This year, it also signed an MoU with the Tripura government to develop floating solar in the northeastern state. Besides this, it has also tied up with other players to develop Green Hydrogen, Green Ammonia, and other forms of clean energy technologies.
