NHPC To Catalyze Green Hydrogen Technologies In Leh, Kargil

Highlights :

  • In Leh, NHPC will consider the development of Pilot Green Hydrogen fuel cell-based Microgrid including Hydrogen production to meet the power requirement of the NHPC guest house.
  • In Kargil, the hydrogen generated will be used in fuel cells for mobility which will be capable to run two buses for up to 8 hours in the local area.
NHPC To Catalyze Green Hydrogen Technologies In Leh, Kargil NHPC in MoU with GRIDCO for 2 GW Pumped Storage, 1 GW Solar in Odisha

State-owned National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has announced the signing of two Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) for the establishment of ‘Pilot Green Hydrogen Technologies’ in Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh. The official statement says that the projects are in keeping with the country’s ambition to mitigate the carbon footprint in the power sector.

The Ministry of Power has said that the MOUs were signed in the presence of RK Mathur, Lieutenant Governor, Union Territory of Ladakh.

As per the MOU for Leh, NHPC will take into consideration the establishment of Pilot Green Hydrogen fuel cell-based Microgrid including Hydrogen production to meet the power requirement of the NHPC guest house at Nimmo Bazgo Power Station (Leh) within NHPC premises.

As per the MOU for the Kargil district, the hydrogen produced here will be employed in fuel cells for mobility. This will help run two buses for up to 8 hours in the local area.

The Ministry has also held that NHPC will look at augmenting hydrogen generation commercially to meet the hydrogen needs of the Ladakh region in different sectors such as mobility, transportation, heating, and Micro-grid and a subsequent MoU will be signed separately.

The two pilot projects will create a roadmap for the future establishment of Green Hydrogen and the subsequent mitigation of carbon emission in the transportation/heating sector. Not only will this lure long-term investment in the Hydrogen economy, but will also carve out job opportunities for the youth in Ladakh.

The Prime Minister had introduced the National Hydrogen Mission on India’s 75th Independence Day in 2021 with a goal to help the government achieve its climate targets and making India a green hydrogen hub. This is expected to help the government in meeting the target of production of 5 million tonnes of Green hydrogen by 2030 and expand the use of renewable energy.
