National Institute of Wind Energy Signs MoU With NCMRWF For Forecast Application

The National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) has now signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) for the use and development of a model forecast application.

The application–‘NWP (Numerical Weather Prediction) Model Forecast’ can be used in wind and solar power forecasting. Dinesh Jagdale, Joint Secretary from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), who attended the session, shared the details of the MoU on Wednesday. The MoU was signed during a workshop organized by the NCMRWF on April 18 on the issue of emerging trends and challenges in the renewable sector.

The NWP Models help simulate the wind flow characteristics at a horizontal resolution of several kilometers. It is used to forecast the spatial and temporal variations of the atmosphere. NIWE claimed this could also be used in renewable energy systems to handle uncertainties. Under the new MoU, both agencies will coordinate with each other with their expertise to use the same.

NCMRWF is an arm of the Ministry of Earth Sciences whereas Chennai-based NIWE is an arm of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) working to develop and boost wind energy in the country. The new partnership is likely to pave the way for a collaboration of experts from both organizations to develop weather modeling, data collection, ensemble forecasting, satellite data use, and others.

The NCMRWF earlier partnered with the Indian Navy to share data related to NWP modeling forecasts to improve forecasting with shared resources.
