German automotive giant Mercedes has said that it is setting sights on investing billions of dollars towards the modernisation of its electric vehicle plants in China, Germany and Hungary. In order to cut emissions, the automaker will be shifting to electric vehicles.

The European Union will be looking to cut down CO2 emissions per passenger car by half over their life spane by 2030. It is aspiring to put an end to the sale of fossil fuel cars. In keeping with this, the auto firm has said it is set to be electric by 2023. Eyeing this goal, the firm has further shared that to achieve this goal, it will invest a sum that runs into a three-digit million for each of its plant.

Mercedes will kickstart work on the Rastatt plant in the Germany in the coming time. In Germany, the firm has EV plants in Sindelfingen, Bremen and Rastatt plants. Mercedes will also introduce the first model of the compact vehicle platform MMA from 2024.

The modernisation that will be undertaken at a large scale by Mercedes, which will be committed to curbing energy and water consumption. At the same time, the carmaker will also cut the dependence of the painting systems on fossil fuels and intend to be carbon-free instead.

Mercedes also plans to expand its US plant in Tuscaloosa, where it is mulling over seeking benefit from government subsidies. The firm further revealed that it is open to accepting changes with reference to regulations, as these change from one country to another from time to time.

Mercedes-Benz Energy and Lohum have entered into a strategic partnership for second-life batteries. The agreement is a multi-year supply contract agreement, under which Mercedes-Benz Energy and Lohum have committed to a minimum offtake schedule of 50 MWh per annum across multiple second life module variants. Lohum is Mercedes-Benz Energy’s first partner in Asia.

Mercedes-Benz revealed last that it would build a wind farm at its test track in Papenburg, Germany. The auto-maker held that the output of the wind farm will be more than 100 MW which will cover over 15 per cent of the annual electricity demand of Mercedes-Benz Group AG for the German operations.
