Mangalore University being the only government building in Karnataka and among 37 intitutional buildings in India which will get grid-connected roof-top solarphoto-voltaic system, the project was selected as the pilot project by the ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE). The Mangalore University with this project is aiming to achieve all its energy needs.

The 37 institutions will be generating 1,000 MW of power under the pilot phase which is implemented by Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The SECI and ReNew Solar Energy Private Ltd has joined hands for taking care of the execution of the project according to the technical specifications and conditions of the tender issued. Notably, the University will be the prime beneficiary of the pilot and the ReNew will invest the whole project.

ReNew has completed the process of identifying the places where the PV system will be set up and the university would receive the green power by March 2018.

The maintenance of the project will be taken care of by ReNew for next 25 years, said the Vice Chancellor K Byrappa upon confirming the green development. The University is likely to receive a low Rs 3.839 per unit of power and a power purchase agreement for 25 years will be executed by ReNew, said Byrappa. All the Mangalagangothri campus’ unused rooftop space will be utilized to install Solar PV System.

Byrappa added that after the installation of the pilot the university will be saving about Rs 1.5 crore. The per month bill for the university is Rs 16 lakh per month and goes up to Rs 18-19 lakh in summer. “It will reduce our dependence on grid power supplied by Mescom to a great extent,” Byrappa said.
