India’s largest steel conglomerate JSW Steel has set sights on sourcing green hydrogen from the 3,800-tonne hydrogen plant that is in being established at the Vijayanagar plant. The firm will provide green steel at a premium in  a period of 18-24 months.

The firm has joined hands with JSW Energy to get green hydrogen and green oxygen to facilitate steel production.

In addition to Green Hydrogen and Green Oxygen, JSW Steel will also get about 25 MW of RTC (Round-the-Clock) renewable energy, informed Jayant Acharya, Joint Managing Director, JSW Steel. He further added that for the thermal that is replaced with green energy, the firm will get carbon credits.

As of now, JSW Steel has add its portfolio contracts worth 1 GW of capacity. It has also set into operation 225 MW of solar capacity at Vijayanagar plant in April 2022. This made it the first steel plant in the country to go for large-scale renewable energy deployment.

The firm is looking to achieve 50 million tonnes of capacity and is eyeing the big goal of powering all its operations through 10 GW renewable energy capacity.

Last year, JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal made a strong pitch for going green in it’s 2021-22 annual report. With an aim to reduce the carbon footprint of its operations and reduce dependence on coal based power, Jindal said that the company will be investing INR 10,000 crore to increase it’s use of renewable energy.

as the world grapples with environmental challenges and the need for sustainable practices, India’s steel producers are stepping up with their green plans to drive change and bring down emissions from one of the most carbon-intensive industries. Various Indian steel makers are now stepping up efforts to go green.
