Grandweld Shipyards, a shipbuilder in the UAE has joined hands with Japanese solar firm, Nippon to build a solar plant that will produce 880 MWh of clean energy per year. The project aims to deliver 26.4 GWh of clean energy over the lifespan of the project and to reduce 14,111 metric tons of carbon emissions.

The Japanese solar firm is expanding its presence in the middle east region. A few days back, Nippon had entered into agreements with renewable energy firms, ATG and AJB Investment. The partnership sets sights on the development of a 118 MWp Hattem Solar Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates.

The solar power plant is said to generate close to 4,867 GWh of clean energy every year. This can help power up more than 400,000 homes. The Hattem Solar Power Plant is expected for commissioning by next year.

The Japanese solar firm has bagged the said solar projects worth 998 MW in the same week.

The UAE aspires to generate 40% of its electricity from renewable sources by the end of the decade. The UAE Energy Strategy 2050 targets an energy mix that combines renewable, nuclear and clean energy sources to meet the UAE’s economic requirements and environmental goals. It targets 44 percent clean energy in this mix.

In 2022, the UAE ranked second globally, just behind Australia, with regards to per capita solar energy consumption. The Emirates consumed 1,921 kilowatt hours of solar energy per capita last year. The region has been heavily dependent on coal and gas for its energy needs and having realized this, it is now accelerating clean energy projects.
