India’s 1st Variable Speed PSP To Supply Clean Power To Gujarat By Saur News Bureau/ Updated On Fri, Jun 27th, 2025 Highlights : The agreement aims to support Gujarat’s rising peak-hour power demand while enhancing grid stability amid the increasing integration of intermittent renewable energy sources. India’s 1st Variable Speed PSP To Supply Clean Power To Gujarat In a significant boost to India’s clean energy infrastructure, THDC India Ltd (THDCIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Government of Gujarat and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) for the supply of 184.08 megawatts (MW) of green power from the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) in Uttarakhand—India’s first facility to feature variable speed technology. The agreement aims to support Gujarat’s rising peak-hour power demand while enhancing grid stability amid the increasing integration of intermittent renewable energy sources. The signing ceremony was attended by Gujarat Finance and Energy Minister Kanubhai Desai, senior state officials, and THDCIL’s leadership, including Chairman and Managing Director R.K. Vishnoi and Director (Finance) Sipan Kumar Garg. “With India’s first Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant, we are offering Gujarat a reliable and green energy solution to meet its dynamic peak-hour requirements,” said Vishnoi. “This project is a milestone in THDCIL’s mission to lead India’s energy transition through innovation and engineering excellence.” Located at Tehri in Uttarakhand, the PSP represents a technological leap in India’s hydropower capabilities, enabling flexible generation to balance variable renewable energy and fluctuating power demand. Role in National Clean Energy Push The MoU and PPA are in alignment with the Government of India’s clean energy roadmap, which identifies pumped storage as a key tool for grid balancing, particularly as solar and wind capacities expand rapidly. “This marks a strategic step in THDCIL’s journey toward delivering commercially viable and flexible clean energy solutions,” said Garg. “We remain committed to sustainable growth through forward-looking initiatives.” THDCIL officials said the collaboration reinforces Gujarat’s position as a forward-thinking state in renewable energy adoption, and underlines the central government’s push for state-centre-private cooperation in the clean energy transition. Senior executives from GUVNL and the Government of Gujarat, including MD Anupam Anand and ACS S.J. Haider, were also present at the signing event. The Tehri PSP is expected to play a vital role in meeting India’s Viksit Bharat @2047 vision of a reliable, sustainable and inclusive energy ecosystem.
