Green Stocks May 30: Early Rains Cool Energy Stocks

The earlier-than-expected onset of the monsoons seems to have worked to douse some enthusiasm for energy stocks in general, including green energy stocks. Combined with a weekend and month-end push to keep cash handy, saw selling pressure for all but the strongest performers today. Investors are clearly booking profits when they can after seeing the volatility of the past few months. News of green energy processes hitting zero levels during solar hours due to lack of demand has also played a part no doubt.

A distinct outlier was developer Acme Solar, up by over 3% yet again today, as its portfolio is seen to be much more diversified than others and offers hope for steadier and possibly, even higher returns going ahead. After the strong set of results from wind major Suzlon yesterday, the stock celebrated with a 10% jump, even as peer firm Inox Wind, due to release its results today, also went up 3% in anticipation of a good set of results.

For the rest, it was a matter of losing a little ground or gaining even less, as month-end pressures caught up.

With just one month left in Q1 of FY 2026, it seems like solar firms will definitely deliver a stronger Q1 versus FY 25, aided slightly by the rush to meet the June 30 deadline for 100% ISTS exemption. The odds of a significant slowdown post that deadline are real for now, as the full force of the monsoons takes effect across the country. So punters might want to track Q1 numbers especially hard-to-book profits where they can.

Long-term investors will continue to look at the big picture of India’s 500 GW target by 2030, which seems well within reach now, considering the significant domestic capacity ramp up, and possibly more policy measures to come, especially on energy storage, that will support broader renewable energy growth. many would argue that there is a case to ramp up those targets, seeing how China has blown past its own 2030 targets in 2024 itself.
We would be very surprised if June goes by without the announcement of a major renewable project commissioning or more each week, even as lobbying to get the ISTS exemption extended picks up strength as well. All in all, exciting times ahead for short-term as well as long-term investors.
