The latest report by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) said that India added a total of 2,873 Megawatt (MW) of new renewable energy capacities in the month of June, this year. This is against the addition of 1076 MW of renewable power capacities added to the energy mix in May this year. These additions were reported due to increase in the installed capacities of solar energy, wind energy and small hydro power. On the other hand, co-generation and biomass energy porfolios didn’t show any new additions in the last month.

The CEA report hinted that the highest growth was reported in the addition of 2,275 MW of solar energy capacities, followed by the addition of 575 MW of wind energy, 15 MW of power capacity increase in small hydro projects and 9 GW of additional capacity from Waste-To-Energy plants.

The report meanwhile also said that the month also witnessed the addition of 600 MW of thermal power with the commissioning of Bargh Unit-2 thermal power plant. In addition to this, with the commissioning of Unit-3 of the Kakrapara Atomic Power Plant, the country added 700 MW of additional electricity capacity.

A detailed data-analysis of the May and June report of CEA revealed that among the Indian states, the highest additional of renewable capacity was reported from Gujarat which reported addition of 939 MW of renewable power in June itself. It was followed by Rajasthan (664 MW), Karnataka (583 MW), Maharashtra (199 MW) and Madhya Pradesh (181 MW). These data, thus hinted that the majority of commissioning of the new renewable projects happened in these states, which otherwise are also the most renewable-rich states of India.

As per the pan-India data, Rajasthan has the highest installed capacity of renewable energy with 23.18 GW. It is followed by Gujarat (21.2 GW), Karnataka (17.5 GW) and Maharashtra (12.9 GW). In total the total power capacity of India touched 421.9 GW. This included 237.9 GW of thermal power (56%) and 129.6 GW (30%) of renewable energy (excluding hydro power).
