The latest released monthly power installation report from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) claimed that India added a total of 1076.7 Megawatt (MW) of renewable energy (excluding hydro) in the month of May this year.

It included the addition of 743.34 MW of solar energy. By the end of April 2023, the country had a total installed solar capacity of 67,077.88 MW; by the end of May 2023, its share increased to 67821.22 MW. Solar energy witnessed the highest rise in capacity among all the forms of RE in India.

The second-highest growth was seen in India’s increase in wind energy installation. In May this year, the country added an additional capacity of 330.09 MW of wind energy. Until April this year, India’s total installed capacity of wind energy stood at 42,868.09 MW, whereas it increased to 43,198.98 MW last month.

Small hydro energy didn’t see any new additions as their total installed capacity remained stagnant at 4944.30 MW. Similarly, the biomass/co-generation segment also failed to see any growth. The total installed capacity in this segment remained at 10,248.01 MW in April as well as in May too.

However, there was a minor increase of 2.5 MW in waste-to-energy growth. The total installed capacity of this segment by the end of April this year stood at 554.03 MW which touched 556.53 MW by the end of May.

Regarding India’s total energy mix, thermal energy installations continued to dominate the sector with a total of 2,37,268.91 MW. Coal continued to have its lion’s share of 2,05,235.50 MW out of thermal energy.

India’s total share of renewable energy stood at 1,26,769.04 MW, whereas hydro energy stood at 46,850.17 MW. With the contributions of all fuels in India, the total power installed capacity of the country stood at 4,17,668.12 MW (417 GW).
