Himachal Pradesh has been consistently accelerating efforts towards upgrading the EV (electric vehicle) sector. In a fresh announcement that further gives direction to such efforts, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, in a meeting held in Dharamshala, has placed a premium on identifying sites to set up charging facilities. Green Corridors Highways: Parwanoo-Nalagarh-Una-Hamirpur-Sansarpur Terrace, Bilaspur-Hamirpur-Kangra, and Mandi-Dharamshala-Kangra have been proposed for the initiative.

The government has set sights on making Himachal Pradesh a Green Energy State by March 31, 2026. E-vehicles form a key part of this vision. Towards this, Rajiv Gandhi Self-Employment Scheme-2023 has been given the go-ahead. The Scheme makes way for a uniform 50 percent subsidy for the procurement of e-taxis, e-buses, and e-trucks.

As directed by the Chief Minister, officials from the transport department are to hold a meeting with stakeholders within the following ten days. The establishment of an electric vehicle ecosystem and the transition of all government vehicles into EVs are among the long term ambitions of the state government.

The Chief Minister has said that the promotion of e-vehicles will go a long way in driving forward the goals of sustainable transportation while also curbing carbon emissions.

Close on the heels of Srinagar and Jammu announcing the introduction of 200 electric buses, Dharamshala had announced the initiative of adding 15 electric buses back in February 2023.
