Gothenburg Port Authority has bought a minority share in the Swedish offshore wind farm of 1 GW (unbuilt) by Eolus, a wind power developer in the Nordics.

The said offshore wind farm, which boasts of an installed capacity worth 1,000 MW in Sweden, will have the potential to produce 4-4.5 TWh of renewable electricity every year.

Eolous will maintain (5% of the ownsership, while Gothenburg Port Authority will  stake a 5% stake. SEK 15m a will be employed to cover the acquisition and will also aid with the partial financing of project costs of Västvind.

The port authority has claimed a stake in the project with a view to decarbonise its operations with the help of green energy supplied to it.

“The Port of Gothenburg’s strategy is to lead the green transition of maritime traffic, but this position will not come about without some effort,” said Gothenburg Port Authority Chief Executive Elvir Dzanic. He added, “Access to green electricity will be entirely crucial for the port’s development and competitiveness. Investing in electricity production is therefore a strategic decision for us.”

It is around the year 2029 that Västvind will be set into operation while the construction is targetted for 2027.

Eolus chief executive Per Witalisson said, “Regional renewable electricity generation is an integral and necessary part of the green transition in both the transportation sector and industry in western Sweden. It is therefore both natural and strategically important that the Port of Gothenburg is part of Västvind.”
